The late 19th century saw a renewed interest and fashion for Japonisme in France. These unusual coloured double carp vases are based on a Japanese porcelain original and the Baccarat glass examples were made originally for the 1878 Paris Exposition Universelle (one clear glass with blue enamelled eyes, and one red glass example very similar to the present examples).
