A SUITE OF LOUIS XV PALE-BLUE AND GREY-PAINTED SEAT FURNITURE
The comtesse du Barry and the comte d'Artois ranked amongst Lebas' most important patrons. He produced chairs in both the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles. His sons Barthélemy and Jean-Jacques both became maîtres-ébénistes and worked with their father in the rue de Cléry.
An important set of eight fauteuils by Lebas was sold Christies, London, 19 May 1983, lot 76. A set of six Louis XV fauteuils also by Lebas, with similarly carved serpentined seatrails, was sold Christies, London, 31 March 1977, lot 26.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This attractive suite of seat-furniture is in country house condition. There are the inevitable marks, chips and scratches and separations to the joins along the lines of construction consistent with age and use. Traces of historic apparently inactive woodworm to the suite. B: With a reinforced strip and repaired break to right hand side of apron. C: With two reinforced strips to the left side of the apron and back right seat rail. D: A very small loss to the top of the front right leg. E: A small split to the right of the cresting. F: Spliced repair to the back right leg. There is a split to the left side of the toprail. Small fillet repair to one leg. The canape with a reinforced brace to the underside of the serpentine seat rail to the left-hand-side. Some glued repairs to the front legs. This would benefit from further restoration in order to be entirely structurally stable. There are chips and flaking to the painted decoration across the whole suite, with traces of previous light blue painted decoration underneath. The floral upholstery is in good condition, there are some minor marks and stains, for example to the centre of the padded back to one bergere, but the colours remain attractive and bright.
