Lot Essay

The portrait in the present frame is probably a self-portrait of Count Michael de Torby (1898-1959), son of Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich and Countess Sophie of Merenberg. Count Michael de Torby was their only son and the youngest child in the family. He was educated at Eton College and became an artist. His style was inspired by Chinese art and he mostly worked in watercolour on rice paper or silk. He was also an avid collector of Chinese porcelain which was often featured in his still lifes.
