The present work was published as an illustration for Rex Beach’s short novel “Don Careless: The Romance of a Firebrand” in the February 1928 issue of Cosmopolitan magazine. The story takes place in the Spanish-American city of Ascensión (possibly Asunción, Paraguay) and centers on a profligate Don Juan named Francisco Suarez, who bets he can win the heart of famed beauty Valencia Montes. The present scene, captioned “Valencia was made aware of the fact that she had attracted a new admirer. Francisco had learned at what hour she was likely to take…” depicts Francisco glancing at Valencia as she passes by.
