Lot Essay

Designs described as being in the 'Antique style' factored vastly among Barbedienne's earliest submissions to the Expositions universelles from 1855 onward. The appetite for objets d'art after the Antique was not unique to Barbedienne's clientele and a number of English firms, including Thomas Messenger and Sons of Birmingham and London produced similar tripod stands beginning in the second quarter of the 19th century after George Smith popularized the form in his Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1806 (pl.III). Another lamp of this form by Barbedienne was sold Christie's, London, 18 September 2014, lot 84.
