Lot Essay

With exquisite spiraled crystal and finely-chased gilt-bronze mounts, these exuberant vases are a fine manifestation of the Compagnie des Cristalleries de Baccarat’s production in the early 20th century. The bulrush finials are highly reminiscent of Baccarat’s drageoir vase, a dispensary for dragées (sugared almonds), which was first displayed by Baccarat in 1909 at the Exposition internationale de l'Est de la France, Nancy. At the same exhibition the firm’s display of of vases overwhelmingly featured the present spirally gadrooned style of the crystal and became a hallmark of Baccarat’s early 20th century production of deluxe table-top objects. Another closely related spiral-gadrooned vase with a similar rocaille foot is shown in the Baccarat warehouse circa 1898 (J Curtis, Baccarat , London,1992, p. 73) A slightly smaller and related pair of vases featuring rocaille candle branches was sold Christie’s, London, 12 November 2020, lot 262 (£25,000). A single vase of this exact model was sold Sotheby’s, New York, 29 October 2014, lot 38 ($35,000).
