Lot Essay

With its distinctive carving of shells and leaves to the legs relates to the early work of the Cresson family, a dynasty of various prominent menuisiers, who descend from the brothers Jean (maitriseunknown) and Charles Cresson (maître in 1720). The very pronounced deep shell carved with gadroons of the current fauteuil features in the work of Jean-Baptiste Cresson, son of Charles, and possibly be seen as an early example of his work (P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Francais du XVIII siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 206. A related fauteuil, reputedly from the chateau de Fontainebleau, is illustrated in N. Hoentschel, Georges Hoentschel, St. Remy, 1999, p. 163.
