Lot Essay

The chairs correspond to Gillows' prevailing style of the 1820s and 1830s. Susan E. Stuart illustrates several pieces that show marked similarity to the chairs offered here including a rosewood pier table, now at Nostell Priory but possibly purchased elsewhere, and the rather more elaborate `neo-baroque' giltwood seat furniture purchased in 1833 by the the 5th Earl Fitzwilliam for the Whistlejacket Room at Wentworth Woodhouse (Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730 - 1840, Woodbridge, 2008, vol. II, p. 359, pl. E24 and vol. I, p.225, pl. 215).
The identity of A. Edmondson is not confirmed by Stuart, other than recording that there appear in Gillows Estimate Sketch Book indexes several references to either customers or workmen of that surname. The stamp itself looks to be that of a craftsman (ibid., vol. II, pp. 179).
