Lot Essay

Raul Lino (1879 – 1974) was a Portuguese architect, designer and writer. His work focused on the idealization and development of the Casa Portuguesa. Lino emphasized the importance of constructing houses with materials suitable for their environment, the importance of positioning doors and windows for the most dramatic effect, and how the interior of a space worked within a client’s lifestyle. Lino studied in Windsor, England, for three years before continuing his studies in Berlin, eventually working under German revivalist architect Albrecht Haupt. His resume boasts over 700 projects, most of them in Cascais and Sintra. Casa dos Penedos is one of his most important houses, constructed in 1922 in Sintra and possibly commissioned by Carlos Machado Ribeiro Ferreira (b. 1878). Casa dos Penedos, which translates to 'house of the two boulders', was illustrated in his 1933 publication Casas Portuguesas, and features an illustration of the Dining Room in which the present lot hung.
