Lot Essay

The present lot once belonged to the renowned collector, J. Pierpont Morgan, whose collection spanned nearly every category and included an impressive group of exceptional Chinese works of art. Morgan was an extremely important benefactor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which now houses much of his collection that was not sold in the 1944 sales at Parke-Bernet. This screen may well have once been installed in the JP Morgan house on Madison Avenue, before it was demolished in 1927. For archival images and further information on the house's interiors, see A. Lewis, J. Turner, and S. McQuillin, The Opulent Interiors of the Gilded Age, New York, 1987, pp. 144-147.
