Lot Essay

A tazze of a a slightly earlier date, with similarly turned gadrooned supports ending in goat hoof-form feet, with central spiraling snake stem and spiraling foliate-form vines is in Louvre (inv. N 1506, OA 13). The example in the Louvre, dated from 1785, was supplied to Princess Kinsky (1729-1794) by marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre in 1786, as part of a three piece garniture. The goat hoof-form feet on this example and the present lot recall the ormolu and jasper parfum made for the Duc d’Amount by celebrated bronzier Pierre Gouthière (1732–1813), once owned by Marie-Antoinette and now in the Wallace Collection (inv. F292).

The example in the Louvre is illustrated in D. Alcouffe, et al., Gilt bronzes in the Louvre, Paris, 2004, p. 227, fig. 114.)
