A GEORGE II MAHOGANY TRIPOD TABLE
IN THE MANNER OF THOMAS CHIPPENDALE, CIRCA 1755-60, THE TOP AND BASE POSSIBLY ASSOCIATED
The distinctive segmental veneers of the top of this tripod table relate to the documented work of Thomas Chippendale, for instance on two ‘tea’ or ‘work’ tables supplied to Harewood House circa 1770 (illustrated in C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. II, p. 256, fig. 469). The pronounced pierced base features in designs for the bases of candle stands and fire screens in Chippendale’s famous pattern book, The Gentlemen’s & Cabinet-Maker’s Director (plates CXLVI and CLVI in the 1762 3rd edition).
