Lot Essay

The stamp on the hinges almost certainly refers to Hugh Tibbatts, 'hinge and sash fastening maker' of Bell Street Wolverhampton, listed in The Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Wallsall, Dudley, Bilston and Willenhall Directory of 1781. This stamp appears on other examples of tables of this form and other hinged tables in the mid-18th century. There appears to be no mention of Tibats or Tibbats in the West Midlands area after 1781.
