Lot Essay

Firmly attributed to Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779), this serving table shares many identical stylistic and technical elements with his documented commissions.

The present lot’s central tablet with the circular patera over a ribbon-tied swag can also be seen on the corner tablets of a sideboard table supplied by Chippendale circa 1776 for Ninian Home (1732 – 1795) at Paxton House, Berwickshire illustrated in C. Gilbert, The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale, 1978, fig. 351, p.193. The Paxton House example also shares the same paired tapering square legs with recessed arch panels, a characteristic typical of Chippendale. Furthermore, the molded border on the present lot is identical to the molding found around the sides of a set of fourteen side chairs executed by Chippendale circa 1772 for Goldsborough Hall, Yorkshire, now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York [1996.426.1–.14].

Other closely related serving tables by Chippendale include one from Goldsborough Hall (sold Christie’s London, 29 November 2001, lot 119) and another almost certainly from Dingley Hall (sold Christie’s New York, 23 October 2002, lot 175).
