Lot Essay

The charming fête champêtre depicted on this Soho tapestry relates to a set of four tapestries signed by Bradshaw in Ham House depicting The Dance, The Fountain, The Swing and Fruit Gatherers which feature similar scenes of courtly figures, clearly influenced by the French painters Watteau and Pater (see D. MacColl, ‘Bradshaw’s Tapestries at Ham House’, Burlington Magazine, 1917, pp. 148-157).
William Bradshaw (1728–d. 1775) was a cabinet maker, upholder and ‘tapissier’ and worked out of Greek Street, Soho, London.
