In good order and appearance, structurally sound, beautiful form. Upholstery on both chairs with mild general wear and minor marks/rubbing as to be expected with use.
The 18th century chair: with general overall marks, nicks, and small losses and repairs throughout, consistent with age and use. Scattered small chips and tiny losses to the later painted surface decoration throughout. Some minor shrinkage at the joins. An old repaired break to the acanthus leaf at the center of the front seat-rail. With tourniquet-holes to the interior of the seat-rails, a constructional feature consistent with an 18th century manufacture and a trait often seen on pieces made in the workshop of Thomas Chippendale.
The later copy: with marks, chips, and small losses to the painted surface decoration. Slight variations in the carving and overall scale compared to the 18th century chair, as is expected, and not readily noticeable unless closely examined.
