Lot Essay

The Electors of Saxony depicted on this beaker are John George I (1611-1656), John George II (1656-1680), and John George III (1680-1691). Based on the Latin inscription to the underside, this beaker probably commemorates the expansion and renovation of Moritzburg Castle by John George II in 1661. The inset medallion to the base includes further symbols of the Electors of Saxony, and the motto Pro Fidi Et Patria.
