Lot Essay

Henry Barraud was the younger brother of William (1810-1850), who was also an important sporting artist. The brothers shared a studio from 1835 until William's death in 1850. Though it was often thought William contributed the animals and Henry the landscape and staffage in works that the two artists painted together, the present picture proves otherwise. Henry was an extremely talented painter of animals in his own right and completed many major sporting paintings of his own both during his brother’s life and after his death. In addition to collaborating on paintings, they also produced a book entitled Sketches of Figures and Animals published circa1850. Their jointly created works and Henry’s own paintings were regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy.
