Lot Essay

The form and ornament of this table with the dished top and spiked foliate scrolls on the legs typifies Irish furniture of the mid-18th century. The pounced ground offsets the fluid carving with shell and flower motifs. The squared carved paw feet seen here are also a frequent feature and can be compared with another example in the McDonnell Room at Malahide Castle, Co. Dublin (G. Kenyon, The Irish Furniture at Malahide Castle, 1994, pp. 90-91). Further related examples are illustrated in Glin and J. Peill, Irish Furniture, New Haven, 2007, p. 239 figs. 145-7.
