The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is supported on the reverse with a glue lining and the original tacking edges have been maintained. The canvas is slightly slack on its stretcher, but is stable. The paint layer exhibits a fine craquelure throughout, which is slightly wider in the flesh tones. The colors are evenly saturated by a clear varnish. The impasto in the face and decoration of the hat is nicely preserved. The signature has suffered some abrasion but is still legible. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed extremely minor retouches to the proper left eye brow, nostirl and upper lip. A futher area of retouching was revealed in the background at lower left. Overall the painting is in good condition and can be hung in its present state. The work is offered in an elegantly carved and gilt wood frame.
