The design for this imposing and impressively-carved center table is derived from a 1905 order (A746) for an 'octagonal wood table' for Edward F. Caldwell. Proving to be a popular form, another design of octagonal form executed in marble appears later in the same year (A1664), followed by the present rectangular variant example, which was ordered in August of 1906 for an anonymous client (A4594). A nearly identical table by Caldwell was sold at Christie's, New York, 26 November 2013, lot 13 ($94,500).
