Lot Essay

An enduring and popular model in the mid-19th century, examples of the present clock have been offered as a garniture de cheminee together with shell-bearing putti-form candelabra. Another clock, possibly cast by Monbro or a contemporary foundry, is illustrated in C. Payne, François Linke: The Belle Epoque of French Furniture, Woodbridge, 2003, p. 213, pl. 233. The same example of this form was sold Christie's, New York, 14-15 April 2011, lot 175 ($80,500).
The Parisian fondeur and doreur Henri Picard was based at 6 rue Jarente in 1831, moving to 10 rue de la Perle in 1839. Picard notably worked on the petits appartements of Emperor Napoleon III at the Louvre and supplied an extensive surtout de table to Emperor Franz Joseph now in Hofburg Silberkammer, Vienna.
