For a Talavera jar of similar form dated 1625-50 in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, see Accession No. 1983.469.2. For a condiment dish decorated with a similar subject matter, see A. Ray, Spanish Pottery 1248-1898, New York, 2000, p. 188, pl. 347.

The inscription Oñate may refer to the Basque town of Oñati. Medieval buildings in the town bear a similarity to those painted on this jar, including the former University of Oñati, one of the oldest university buildings on the Iberian peninsula.
