The elegant form of these refined and slender consoles reflects the ‘Louis Seize’ style promoted by fashionable architects and designers in the 1790s and early 1800s such as Henry Holland (1745-1806). He employed this style in such influential commissions as Carlton House for the Prince Regent and Southill for Samuel Whitbread, where he frequently ordered furniture directly influenced by the work of French cabinet-makers such as Adam Weisweiler. A series of ‘Louis Seize’ side cabinets with similar slender fluted uprights and ‘toupie’ feet is illustrated in C. Musgrave, Regency Furniture 1800-1830, London, 1961, figs. 49-51.
