The arms are those of Goldsmid with the cadency mark of a crescent for a second son, almost certainly for Alexander Goldsmid (1770-1843) of Finsbury Square, London and Ticehurst, Sussex, second son of Asher Goldsmid (d.1822) and brother of Isaac Lyon Goldsmid, later 1st Bt. (1778-1859). The Anglo-Jewish Goldsmid family were bankers and philanthropists, descended from Aaron Goldsmid (d.1782), a Dutch merchant who came to in England in the 1760s. Alexander’s brother Isaac, a financier and campaigner for Jewish emancipation, was the first Jewish baronet.
