See D. Peters, op. cit., for a discussion of this royal service, possibly first used at the Pavillon Français and subsequently at the Château de Trianon. Peters also draws attention to seven assiettes à groseillessold Christie's, London, 6 April 1875, lot 55 which includes one example inscribed "Le Sieur, Aout, 1763".
The present dishes, known as a porte-huiliers, were supplied by Sèvres with and without pierced receptacles for oil bottles for their dinner services. Those without receptacles were sometimes called porte-huiliers sans carcasses and were also used as déjeuner trays. David Peters as yet unpublished, updated manuscript for Service List 63-3 references the present porte-huiliers (sans carcasses) and notes that they likely correspond to the pair purchased by Louis XV for 48 livres in 1763 or the another pair purchased in 1764 for the same price. Christie's would like to thank David Peters for his assistance with this information.
Two plates from this service were sold in Treasures of France, Christie's, New York, 24 October, 2012, lot 159. Also compare the three ice cups from the service, formerly the property of Lord Kinnaird, removed from Rossie Priory, Perthshire and sold at Christie's, London, 3 July 1989, lot 73, illustrated by Christian Baulez, Versailles, deux siècles d'histoire de l'art, Paris, 2007, pp.272-3, pl. 9.
