Lot Essay

The inscription TS7 is the artist's code for his seventh work depicting Teodor Starkowski.
Lincoln Kirstein (1907-1996) is regarded as one of the most important figures in the development of American culture in the 20th century. While studying at Harvard University, he co-founded the Harvard Society of Contemporary Art in 1928. The following year, he helped establish the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
Kirstein’s passion for ballet began at the age of 12. He met the world-renowned choreographer George Balanchine in 1933 and together they established the School of American Ballet in 1934 and the New York City Ballet in 1948. Kirstein served as the President of the school and as the company’s General Director until his retirement in 1989. During his time in New York City, he married Fildema Cadmus, the sister of artist Paul Cadmus.
