Lot Essay

The Greek key frieze and inset cabinet door panels imitate designs from the Anglesey desk, which was commissioned by and named for the first Marquess of Anglesey, Henry William Paget who led the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo. The Anglesey desk was sold Christie's London, 8 July 1993 for 1.76 million pounds, the highest price ever achieved for English furniture at the time. It was made by Marsh and Tatham, London cabinetmakers with Royal patronage in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The firm also furnished Carlton House and the Brighton Pavilion for the Prince Regent.
