Lot Essay

The design for these candlesticks comes from a design for ormolu candlesticks by Pierre Gouthière circa 1765-67. An example of these were sold at Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 11 June 1986, and were then illustrated in the accompanying publication to the Frick Collection's exhibition Pierre Gouthière: Virtuoso Gilder at the French Court (2016), pp. 216-217, cat. 20. Gouthière's original model was then copied by the silversmith firm of Boulton & Fothergill in London, who made copies both in silver and ormolu with and without branches. A pair of candlesticks in silver by Boulton & Fothergill were sold at Christie's, London, 2 June 2009, lot 277.
