Lot Essay

The decoration on the present seau is very similar to that found on a small service delivered to Jeanne Gomard de Vaubernier, Comtesse Du Barry on 1 September 1770 - the third bleu céleste service acquired by her that year. In an inventory made just after her execution on 8 December 1794, it was described as 'Service fond bleu et Blanc avec Médaillons representant des Amours', a description that serves equally for the present seau. However, although it has been in several collections with a similar example from the Du Barry service, its painted panels are larger in scale and positioned lower on the side of the pot, the linking bands are more deeply curved and reserved with laurel, leading to the conclusion that the cooler is not part of the Comtesse’s service.
