Lot Essay

Jean-Baptiste-Étienne Genest was the chief of painting at the Vincennes and Sèvres manufactories from 1752 to 1788. His work was so well regarded that he painted most of the figures on the notoriously expensive and elaborate dinner service made for Catherine the Great in 1778 and 1779.
