Lot Essay

The only other known 'tartan' teapot of this type is in the Burnap Collection at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City (object no. 41-23/695 A,B). See R.E. Taggart, The Frank P. and Harriet C. Burnap Collection of English Pottery in the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery, Kansas City, 1967, p. 67, no. 244.

Prince Charles Edward Stuart, known as "Bonnie Prince Charlie" or "The Young Pretender," is best known for his role in the Jacobite uprising of 1745, when he fought for the Jacobite cause to place his father, James Francis Edward Stuart, on the thrones of England and Scotland. A small group of known Jacobite ceramics made in Staffordshire depict Bonnie Prince Charlie, primarily taken from known portraits. The likeness on the present lot is likely after Allan Ramsay's portrait of the Prince painted circa 1745, now housed in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
