Le poète et peintre allemand Carl Spitzweg a décrit dans de nombreuses lettres les soirées musicales qu’il passait en famille. Le présent dessin illustre l’une de celles-ci : sa belle-mère, Kreszentia Neunerdt (qui avait épousé en première noce Simon Spitzweg, le père de l’artiste), joue du piano devant son mari, le marchand Hermann Neunerdt, qui l’accompagne à la flûte. A l’arrière-plan se tient une dame âgée endormie dans un fauteuil. Carl Spitzweg fait mention de cette composition dans son journal en 1829 : « Mère Kreszentia au piano forte, derrière son Hermann ». Carl Spitzweg joue ici sur un habile jeu de lumière pour associer son beau-père à une figure démoniaque : l’ombre projetée sur le rideau, à l’arrière-plan, témoigne des difficultés que l’artiste a eues avec son beau-père au début du second mariage de Kreszentia (S. Wichmann, , Stuttgart, 2002, p. 154).
Le présent dessin est préparatoire à une huile sur carton peinte vers 1840 et actuellement conservée en mains privées (G. Roennefahrt, , Munich, 1960, no. 1099 ill.).

The German poet and painter Carl Spitzweg described in many letters the musical evenings he spent with his family. The present drawing illustrates one of these: his stepmother, Kreszentia Neunerdt (her first marriage was to Simon Spitzweg, the artist’s father) plays the piano in front of her husband, the dealer Hermann Neunerdt, who accompanies her on the flute. In the background, an elderly lady is asleep in an armchair. Carl Spitzweg mentions this composition in his diary in 1829: "Mother Kreszentia at the pianoforte, behind her Hermann". Carl Spitzweg plays with light effects to associate his stepfather with a demonic figure: the shadow cast on the curtain in the background shows the difficulties the artist had with his stepfather at the beginning of Kreszentia's second marriage (S. Wichmann, , Stuttgart, 2002, p. 154).
The present drawing is preparatory to an oil on cardboard painted around 1840 and currently held in private hands (G. Roennefahrt, , Munich, 1960, no. 1099 ill.).
