Lot Essay

A tapestry of identical design and signed by Jacob I van der Borght is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London (T.162-1931). There are several mention of tapestry series illustrating the Seasons and Elements in the 18th century. A sales catalogue of Pieter van der Hecke (d. 1752) mentions a set of six such tapestries, four Seasons and two Elements, designed by Lodewijk van Schoor. A set of tapestries, possibly from the same design from the collection of Mme Dubemet Douine, sold Bellier, Ader, Paris, 15 - 16 May 1946, lot 250.

Lodewijk van Schoor (d. 1702) was one of the most highly regarded and prolific tapestry designers in Brussels in the late 17th Century. Records from the merchant Nicolaas Naulaerts and his successor's archives of 1699 to 1709 document a set of the Seasons by van Schoor in their collection.
