Lot Essay

The present lantern corresponds to a design by Thomas Chippendale in The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director, 3rd Edition, 1762, pl. CLIII. It was a perennially popular design and was reproduced during the 19th and 20th centuries.
A pair of near-identical though slightly smaller lanterns was in the collection of Viscount Lever, sold The Leverhulme Collection, Thornton Manor, Wirral, Merseyside; Sotheby's, 26-27 June 2001, lot 14 (£55,700 inc' prem') and another of similar size, lot 171 (£20,050 inc' prem').
Another was sold Christie's house sale, Cowdray Park, 13 September 2011, lot 225 (£8,125 inc' prem'). This and other lighting at both Cowdray House and Dunecht House was most likely supplied to Weetman Dickinson Pearson, 1st Viscount Cowdray (d. 1927) by Lenygon & Co. Interior Decorators, of 31 Old Burlington Street, London.
