Lot Essay

This beautiful filigree casket reflects the collecting habits of the British nobility abroad in the 18th and 19th centuries and its later inscription with the date 19 June 1838 flanked by initials indicates that it was presented as a wedding or anniversary gift. A closely related casket from the collection of the Earls of Mansfield was sold Scone Palace and Blairquhan The Selected Contents of Two Great Scottish Houses; Christie's, London, 24 May 2007, lot 552 (£10,200).

Modelled as a 'dressing-table' chest and filigreed with foliate scrolls in the Louis Quatorze 'Roman' fashion, the casket relates to items of the lacquer toilet services discussed in Messrs Parker and Stalker's, Treatise of Japanning, 1688, and reflects the 'India' fashion promoted at the period by the East India Trading Companies. Related silver manufactures, possibly executed by Chinese craftsmen in India (Goa) or the Portuguese and Spanish colonies of Southeast Asia are discussed by M. Menshikova in Silver Wonders from the East; Filigree of the Tsars, Amsterdam, 2006. A further closely related filigreee casket from the Collection Padua Ramos, attributed to Goanese workshops, is illustrated in Lisbon, Museo de Sa Roque, The Heritage of Rauluchantim, 1996, no. 27, p. 214.
