The oval plate within a moulded and gadrooned surround, elaborately carved and surmounted by shells and palm fronds, with scrolling foliage flanked by floral garlands including acanthus, husks, pomegranates and roses, the apron with a shell, the mercury silver plate probably original, the backboard replaced, the five foliate clusters possibly re-used and the shell cresting later added

Lot Essay

The pier glass, with its Roman-medallion frame wrapped by Roman foliage, relates to a frame pattern invented by the Rome-trained artist William Kent (d. 1748), Master Carpenter to George II's Board of Works and Portrait Painter to the King (illustrated as the frontispiece to John Vardy's Some Designs of Mr. Inigo Jones and Mr. William Kent, London, 1744).
