Lot Essay

Christian Frederick Zincke (1683-1767) was the son of a Dresden goldsmith. In 1706, he moved to England and studied enamel painting with Charles Boit (1662-1727) and started his career by copying portraits by Peter Lely (1618-1680) and Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723). In 1732, he was appointed cabinet painter to Frederick, Prince of Wales, George II's eldest son. However, the onset of blindness forced him to retire in 1752.

This miniature is in the style of Sir Godfrey Kneller's portraits, as seen with the sitter's lascivious pose, the low-cut dress and the open and pleasant face.
