Lot Essay

Thomas James, 7th Viscount Bulkeley and 1st Baron Bulkeley of Beaumaris (1752-1822), was the last in the direct line of a family that had held estates on Anglesey since the fifteenth century. Bulkeley made the Grand Tour in 1773-4, reaching Rome by 19 January 1774. He commissioned a portrait whilst in the city. The picture, traditionally attributed to George Romney, was exhibited at Christie's, London, The Treasures of the North, 2000, cat. no. 6. It shows him in the Roman Campagna, with the Temple of Minerva Medica beyond. On his death he left his North Welsh estates to his half brother's son Richard Bulkeley Williams, who assume name and arms of Bulkeley by Royal Licence in 1827.
