Lot Essay

Édouard Lièvre was one of the most talented draughtsmen and prolific industrial designers of the second half of the 19th century. Lièvre sought to express his art through multiple mediums – he learnt printing, drawing, gouache, metalwork, sculpture and ébénisterie. Embodying the industrial aspirations of his day, he utilised the most advanced technology to realise his designs. A lifelong admirer of Holbein and Rembrandt, it is in the style of the Northern Renaissance that Lièvre first found inspiration for furniture designs - the present lot is a superbly accomplished example of Lièvre's design in this style.
The attribution of the design to Édouard Lièvre is made with comparison to the description of Lot 19 in the sale of his personal property following his death, Succession de Feu Edouard Lièvre, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 21-24 March 1887. The description reads as follows:
Grand et beau meuble de style Renaissance et daspect monumental, à deux corps, en noyer dAmérique ciré et enrichi de bronzes finement ciselés, à patine vieil or. / Le corps supérieur forme vitrine à trois portes garnies de glaces biseautées ; celle du milieu, plus élevée et en ressaut, est cintrée du haut. Deux médaillons-bustes de bronze, en haut-relief, en décorent les tympans. Des pilastres, à chapiteaux dun beau modèle, encadrent ces portes ; ils sont entièrement recouverts, ainsi que toutes les frises, dun réseau de petits enroulements et dornements déliés, en bronze délicatement ajouré en manière de dentelle. Des vases et des motifs à rinceaux feuillagés entremêlés de rubans, aussi en bronze, surmontent la corniche./ Le corps inférieur, élevé sur deux degrés à moulures, est à trois portes pleines dont lornementation consiste en une suite darcades géminées. Quatre colonnes dégagées, en marbre rouge campan, à bases, bracelets ornés et chapiteaux de bronze ciselées, supportent lentablement du corps inférieur, dont la frise est pourvue de trois tiroirs.
