Lot Essay

The design of this hall bench, with its distinctive 'cushion mouldings' to the top of each leg, first appears in 1800 when Gillows supplied a set of hall chairs with matching bench to Henry Sudell of Blackburn in 1800. A further hall bench of this pattern, bearing the arms of the Earl of Eglinton, is illustrated in S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, London, 2008, p. 202, pl. 176). Gillows also supplied a set of matching chairs to Sir John Shaw Stewart of Ardgowan house, Renfrewshire around the same time (S. Stuart, op.cit., p.202).
