Lot Essay

These encoignures of exquisite quality are typical of the output of Henri Dasson. Renowned for the exceptional standard of the ormolu mounts he used, Dasson specialised in copies of Louis XIV, XV and XVI furniture, but he also manipulated 18th century designs to his own taste. The mounts on these encoignures are designed exactly after the mounts on a famous pair of ormolu-mounted lacquer encoignures made in circa 1785 by Martin Carlin for the grand cabinet of Victoire-Louise-Marie-Thérèse of France, Louis XVI's aunt at the château de Bellevue and now in the Louvre (OA 5499 1). The mahogany veneers however, recall the work of Carlin's contemporary Adam Weisweiler and in particular a pair of encoignures made circa 1782 for the duchesse de Polignac, currently in the collection of the château de Versailles (V1857;Vmb1802).
