Lot Essay

The design of the present chairs relates closely to one published in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman's and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 3rd edition, 1762, pl. XVII. Related hall chairs of this pattern are in the collection of the Earl of Pembroke at Wilton House, Salisbury (A. Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, London, 1968, fig. 190). A set of four chairs, previously in the collection of Viscountess Davenport was sold from the Samuel Messer Collection, Christie's, London, 5 December 1991, lot 59. A further pair was sold 'Frawley House, Oxfordshire', Sotheby's, London, 14-15 October, 2003, lot 77.
