Lot Essay

Mathieu Bauve, maître in 1754.
An innovator in furniture design, Mathieu Bauve was at the height of his craft and is considered amongst the most celebrated furniture markers of his age. After an apprenticeship with Nicolas-Quinibert Foliot, he was admitted for his maîtrise receiving the distinction on the same day as Jean-Baptiste Boulard, RVLC and Fromageau.
Though not stamped, these marquises were conceived as part of a wider group, of which the canapé (see lot 61) bares the stamp 'BAUVE'.
