Lot Essay

The arms probably refer to Captain Warwick Calmady (1711-88), of Langdon Court, Devon, or possibly his son of the same name, born in 1753. The tea-service and a matching dessert-service remained in the possession of the Calmady family until 1985 when they were dispersed. For a serving-dish from the service see Stockspring Antiques, Exhibition catalogue, March 16 - 1 April, London, 2010, no. 46.
