Lot Essay

On 24 March 1603, Queen Elizabeth I of England, last monarch of the House of Tudor, died at Richmond Palace. She was succeeded by her cousin twice removed, King James VI of Scotland, uniting the crowns of Scotland and England. A Bartmannskrug, dated '1603' and attributed to Frechen, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (museum no. BK-NM-10059) bears a very similarly moulded unidentified coat of arms (in reverse) as those flanking the Royal arms on the present lot. Another, dated '1600', with a similar moulded armorial device, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (museum no. 581-1883).
