Lot Essay

This wall-light is a variant of a Louis XVI model by Edme Jean Gallien (1720-1797)and Pierre Bureaux (born 1728) first delivered in 1774 for the château de Chessy.
The model's appeal and success endured through the revolution and into the Empire period, as evidenced by the present example. A set of Empire wall-lights of this model delivered by Galle for the Grand Salon (or Salon de Compagnie) at the Petit Trianon (inv. T514) on 23 December 1809 for 2960 francs is illustrated in D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Petit Trianon, Paris, 1989, p. 98. A further related pair of wall lights is currently conserved in the salle à manger des retours de chasses in the appartement intérieur du roi at the Versailles and the model is also recorded in the inventories of Bagatelle, Saint-Hubert, Le Raincy and Pavlovsk. Further related Empire examples include an almost identical set of four wall-lights sold Artcurial, Paris, 21 September 2022, lot 25 (€131,200), a set of four sold Sotheby's, Paris, 20 April, 2012, lot 173 (€264,750) and a pair sold Christie's Paris, 23 November 2021, lot 117 (€87,500).
