Lot Essay

The luxurious decoration known as 'jewelling', whereby globules of translucent or opaque enamel, on pre-cut gold foils with engraved designs, where applied to the porcelain, was in fashion for a very short time, partly due to the time and expense involved and the inherently fragile nature of the applied bosses. For further discussion of the technique see Rosalind Savill, The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain, London, 1988,vol.III, pp. 972-973; see also Rosalind Savill in Brittle Beauty, Reflections on 18thCentury European Porcelain, London, 2023, pp.482-488, no. 76, for two cups with this type of decoration.

Étienne-Henry Le Guay l'aîné is recorded as a painter initially, then as a gilder specialising in friezes at the Vincennes and Sèvres manufactory from 1748 to 1749 and from 1751 to 1797.
