Lot Essay

Most well known for his portraits of French Jews in the early 20th century, Mané-Katz was also a prolific painter of flowers. This composition follows a model he painted frequently throughout his career: the flower cart. This work follows the painter's typical scheme of vibrantly colored flowers rendered in natural, impressionistic brushstrokes against a dark background.
