Lot Essay

Born in the Aube region in France, Alfred Boucher arrived with his family in Nogent-sur-Seine and at an early age was introduced to sculpture by Marius Ramus before entering the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was awarded the Second Prix de Rome in 1876, and traveled to Italy several times. A recognized artist, he was awarded medals on several occasions, notably at the Exposition Universelle in 1889.
A marble of Diana is presented under the number 2617 in 1893 during the Salon where the French State bought it. Some replicas have been made in bronze and ceramic, but very few in marble. The marble from the Musée Camille Claudel is now on view until January 2024 at the exhibition dedicated to the artist in the Musée Faure in the city of Aix-les-Bains, where he died in 1934, and is signed and dated ‘91’ for 1891. The Musée Faure also owns a plaster.
